Mission and Vision

The core mission of the Center for Race, Inequality and Social Equity Studies (CRISES) is the scholarly analysis of contemporary ethno-racial social conditions (racism, sexism, classism and other forms of oppression) through rigorous methodologies, theory-driven insights and empirically grounded research. The social scientific research conducted by CRISES will inform the vision and attainment of a world without invidious ethno-racial social conditions that are rooted in historical, institutional and systemic inequality. Through its research, collaborations across FAS and Harvard, convenings and residency of scholars, activists and students, CRISES envisions collective healing and a liberated society. CRISES will pursue its mission and vision through three areas of scholarly work:

  • Racial Change and Inequality in the U.S. Studies
  • Comparative Ethno-Racial Transformation
  • Racial Attitudes, Beliefs, and Identities Studies

CRISES aspires to be an ongoing site of original faculty research. This will include first and foremost, the design, implementation and analysis of an annual or semi-annual national representative web-based social survey on issues of Race, Diversity and Democracy in America. Additionally, the Center will:

  • Conduct of a bi-annual topical conference;
  • The support of a regular workshop/speaker series;
  • Providing space for affiliated faculty with research projects including post-doctoral researchers;
  • Funding a small number of annual visiting scholars;
  • Funding for Graduate Student Research; particularly dissertation completion projects;
  • Partnership with the Hutchins Center in the on-going operation of the journal the Du Bois Review: Social Science Research on Race and, social scientific convenings
