2022 Dean’s Report

Harvard School of Dental Medicine Research Education Building

William Giannobile

This past year was a time for reconnection and reinvigoration. After years of the pandemic, we returned to a sense of normalcy. The Longwood campus sprang to life with the buzz of students, and our classrooms, clinics, and research labs were full once again. Time-honored traditions returned with graduation, the white coat ceremony, alumni day, and other gatherings—events that brought us together and reaffirmed our sense of community.

We reflected on our mission and goals in an extensive strategic planning process that was ambitious and exciting. We homed in on what makes HSDM so unique and how we can have an even greater impact in the world through our diverse educational opportunities, bold research aspirations, and patient-centered approach to care. We had a productive year recruiting talented students, faculty, and staff. New leaders in several areas of the School have reinvigorated our programs and brought a fresh new vision.

Our alumni and supporters are important to sustaining this momentum. We are deeply grateful for their support, and we’re delighted to highlight them in our annual honor roll. Thank you to our entire community for your dedication to HSDM.

“The HSDM community truly stands out to me. I saw a diverse community united by passion. I was inspired by the excitement that drove the students, faculty, and staff – each with their own unique interests and projects. I could see that as a student at HSDM, I would have the same opportunity to realize my own goals.”

-Victoria Shen, DMD26

United by passion

A driving passion for Harvard School of Dental Medicine students is the desire to make an impact in the profession and improve oral health in the world. This rang true for this year’s DMD graduates who embraced the uncertainty they faced during the pandemic and went on to successfully match to competitive postdoctoral residencies across the country.

“Uncertainty was our catalyst, driving us to abandon the desire to return to normalcy and instead, work towards the need for the world to be better,” said Praveen Kumar Guntaka, president of the Class of 2022. “We each brought this strength into clinic amid a global pandemic, where every patient spotlighted the critical importance of oral health as a window to overall well-being.”

Inspired by HSDM’s curriculum, small class size, and sense of community, the incoming DMD Class of 2026 arrived on campus eager to make their own mark. The dynamic and diverse class hailed from 18 different states, and six different countries, with a quarter of the new students coming from backgrounds underrepresented in dental medicine.

Office of Dental Education initiatives have strengthened the curriculum with new teaching and learning objectives aligned with national standards and bolstered the community clinic experience. New internal grant opportunities made available to faculty this year have promoted innovation and excellence in developing, delivering, implementing, and evaluating teaching and learning.

HSDM’s advanced graduate education programs are well-positioned with new program leadership in Orthodontics, Dental Public Health, and Implant Dentistry and are poised to attract talented residents to reinvigorated programs. A promising new program focused on Rural Dentistry was also launched this year which seeks to bolster the dental workforce in underserved rural areas.

Clinical Care

“The work done at the dental school during the pandemic demonstrated that the school delivered clinical care in a safe manner, even in a setting with relatively high density of students, staff, and faculty on campus.”

-Giang T. Nguyen, associate provost for campus health and wellbeing, executive director of Harvard University Health Services

Focused on the community

The Harvard Dental Center practices in Boston and Cambridge continued to expand their offerings in FY22 to provide greater care options to the surrounding community. With a firm foothold in Cambridge, the new practice gained a strong patient base, and patient care in both locations rebounded from earlier pandemic limitations.

The ability to provide care safely during the pandemic was underscored with findings from a study published by HSDM authors in JAMA Network Open that revealed clinical activities did not increase the risk of COVID-19 when performed in a clinical care setting with practitioners wearing standard personal protective equipment and participating in comprehensive SARS-CoV-2 surveillance testing.

“The work done at the dental school during the pandemic demonstrated that the school delivered clinical care in a safe manner, even in a setting with relatively high density of students, staff, and faculty on campus,” said Giang T. Nguyen, associate provost for campus health and wellbeing, executive director of Harvard University Health Services.

In Cambridge, the practice expanded its specialized services with the addition of new providers including an orthodontics team led by Dr. Sercan Akyalcin, orofacial pain and sleep apnea specialty services led by Dr. Roxanne Bavarian, and expanded general dentistry with the addition of Dr. Alison Caruso.

In Longwood, popular annual outreach events such as Give Veterans a Smile and Give Kids a Smile returned in FY22 and provided much-needed care and hands-on opportunities for dental students to work directly with those needing compassionate care.

“[These events] have become an annual tradition to host at HSDM, and for good reason,” said Adam Yang, DMD25. “We get the opportunity to not only deliver care and help connect patients to a dental home, but also gain a better understanding of the community we plan to serve in the future.”

Looking ahead, the Harvard Dental Center is well-positioned to advance clinical education and innovation activities with new initiatives and a revitalized clinical model under the leadership of Dr. Sang Lee, who was appointed Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs and now directs all student and patient related clinical activities and oversees daily clinical operations.

“We look forward to bolstering our partnership and furthering our mutual goals of advancing oral, dental, and craniofacial research, education, and training.”

-William V. Giannobile, Dean

Fueled by collaboration

Building on insights gained from the previous year’s research review, new initiatives were launched in FY22 and existing partnerships were strengthened. HSDM and The Forsyth Institute reaffirmed their affiliation, and together launched joint pilot grant opportunities for collaborative studies by researchers from both institutions that have promising potential for future external funding.

Additionally, HSDM and Forsyth received a T90/R90 Institutional Postdoctoral Training Award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research that will support DMD/PhD and DMD/DMSc programs and postdoctoral positions for faculty, amplifying opportunities for clinicians and research scientists at both institutions to obtain collaborative, multidisciplinary experience in basic, translational, or clinical research related to oral and craniofacial diseases, conditions, and disorders.

With over $5.6 million in grant funding in FY22, HSDM researchers led exciting new studies exploring diverse areas such as using machine learning to predict tooth loss, investigations into the role of stem cells in tooth repair, research into new therapeutic pathways for the treatment of periodontitis, and using dental ultrasonography to advance the understanding of peri-implant health and wound healing.

Several National Institute of Health (NIH) awards spurred promising new research as well. Dr. Hawazin Elani, MMSc15, received a NIH R01 award to assess the impact of Medicaid on disparities in dental care utilization. Her field study will examine barriers to accessing dental care among low-income and minority adults who have gained dental insurance since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and how that access varies across states.

Dr. Qian Cong, an investigator in HSDM’s Yang Lab, received a Pathway to Independence Award given to outstanding early career researchers by NIH’s National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. The award will help further her study of heterotopic ossification.

Oral Health Impact

“This project started from a bold idea that we could reach millions of Americans who may not have access to a dentist by enlisting the greater healthcare workforce as partners in oral health.”

-Shenam Ticku, instructor in Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology

Committed to advocacy

HSDM faculty are leading important initiatives and conversations to advance oral health infrastructure, training, and policy both nationally and on a global scale. One example of this is the One Hundred Million Mouths Campaign (100 MMC)—an initiative led by Harvard School of Dental Medicine faculty and other collaborators to create a network of primary care providers across the country who can serve as oral health care allies and advocates.

“This project started from a bold idea that we could reach millions of Americans who may not have access to a dentist by enlisting the greater healthcare workforce as partners in oral health. These partners, or champions as we call them, can train their peers, and create more advocates for oral health, thus amplifying our reach,” said Shenam Ticku, MPH16, instructor in Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology, and co-principal investigator for the project.

Now in its second year, the project has successfully expanded to include Oral Health Champions in 14 different U.S. states with the goal of reaching all 50 states within the next decade.

Expanding oral health education to better prepare dental students to care for a growing population of underserved and vulnerable older adults is the goal behind another HSDM-led program “Predoctoral Oral Health Education and Training for an Aging America (POHETAA)” which was funded this year by the Health Resources and Services Administration.

“With this program we hope to improve and expand dental students’ exposure to elder care issues they will face in their future clinical practice,” said Dr. Christine Riedy, chair and associate professor of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology. “They will gain an understanding of and skills in how to provide care to underserved and vulnerable older adults, and get exposure to interprofessional collaborative practice, teledentistry, and Age-Friendly Health Systems.”

HSDM faculty also lent their voices to national and international oral health topics and policies. Dr. Donna Hackley assistant professor of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology at HSDM was a contributor to the World Dental Federation’s Consensus Statement on Environmentally Sustainable Oral Healthcare. Hackley’s research encompasses environmental, oral health, and overall health.

“By assembling a multi-disciplinary stakeholder coalition comprised of health professionals, industry, and legislative authorities, the FDI World Dental Federation’s Statement aims to elaborate on the challenges that we, as suppliers of dental products, interventions, and services, face in delivering sustainable oral healthcare, and offer strategies for mitigating harmful environmental impact,” she said.

Alumni and Giving

“Understanding the importance of philanthropy, I am committed to giving back to the schools that gave me so much.”

-Corinthia WilkersonMMSc24

Engaged with purpose

It was a year for reconnecting with alumni both near and far, and reengaging with HSDM’s purpose and mission. Over 400 alumni and guests from across the country attended HSDM events in FY22 including specialty receptions in cities around the U.S. and local events in Boston. Alumni Day and Reunion, hosted each year in June, saw record attendance with over 23% of alumni in Reunion classes attending.

A celebration for Dean William Giannobile hosted by the Harvard Dental Alumni Association (HDAA) in the fall, was one of the first opportunities for many alumni to meet Dean Giannobile in person. Attendees also had a chance to mingle with HSDM faculty and students and hear from University leaders including Harvard’s President Lawrence S. Bacow and Harvard Medical School Dean George Daley.

“The energy in the room was palpable and the University support of HSDM was tremendous,” said Miguel Roque, DMD16, MMSc19, president of the HDAA. “The evening represented a true ‘One Harvard’ model. We are so grateful for all the alumni who came from near and far to attend and reminisce with one another.”

Several student scholarship recipients were in attendance including Corinthia Wilkerson, MMSc24, a resident in HSDM’s Periodontology program who received support this year from a Periodontology Fellowship. Wilkerson is passionate about using her dental career to give back to others and help historically marginalized communities.

A graduate of Spelman College, who received her DDS from Meharry Medical College (MMC) School of Dentistry, as well as certificates in public health and health policy, she sees an opportunity to use her training and knowledge of periodontology, public health, and health policy to help educate those in underserved communities about periodontal disease and to also help train the next generation of periodontists.

Grateful for the support of alumni and friends who made her fellowship possible, Wilkerson also underscored the importance of giving back.

“Understanding the importance of philanthropy, I am committed to giving back to the schools that gave me so much. The Perio Fellowship will aid in decreasing the amount of loans I will have to repay and assist me on the road to achieving my financial goals as well as supporting my postdoctoral education.”

Inspired by the Future

Under the leadership of Dean Giannobile, an extensive strategic planning process began last year with participation and feedback from the entire HSDM community. This year it culminated in the launch of a future-focused strategic plan that will serve as a roadmap for HSDM over the next three to five years.

The plan established four bold priority areas focused on: propelling Education and Discovery, advancing Diversity and Vibrancy, fostering Community Purpose, and committing to a Culture of Care. Work has already begun to advance initiatives in each priority area.

The recruitment of key leadership roles this year aligned with work underway to achieve important strategic goals. In Administration and Finance (A&F), Melissa Hunter joined HSDM as dean for A&F, where she brings extensive experience in resource management, budgeting, and strategic planning from a 30-year career serving in higher education roles and advancing the missions of universities focused on healthcare. Also in A&F, Susan Moore became the new director of Human Resources, bringing 21 years of experience in progressive leadership roles at universities across Massachusetts.

In Clinical Affairs, Dr. Sang Lee, MMSc10, PD12, director of Advanced Graduate Education at HSDM, was appointed assistant dean of Clinical Affairs to oversee daily clinical operations in the Harvard Dental Center and revitalize HSDM’s clinical model.

In the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, HSDM recruited Dr. Fadie Coleman, a scientist and mentor in biomedical sciences and science pedagogy, to serve as the School’s first full-time assistant dean for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging.

Additionally, in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity, Dr. Magda Feres, DMSc99, an internationally-recognized scholar and alumna who received her Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in Oral Biology at HSDM, was recently appointed to the role of department chair and will begin her leadership role this year.

HSDM’s leadership is augmented by the strong support of board members in the Dean’s Special Advisory GroupBoard of Fellows, and Alumni Council. These leaders serve as key advisors and ambassadors and are partners in advancing HSDM’s mission.
